Automation is Evil!
Do it anyway.

Hey y’all, I want to let you know that Data Guardians automate tasks that are low-value but high impact.

People either don’t automate on purpose or don’t have the time.

This is for those those who choose not to automate.

Automation is evil. Do it anyway

Why is automation evil?

I’m sure there are many reasons people choose not to automate, but the two I’ve seen most often are:

  • they’re afraid that their job is at risk if they automate
  • automation leads to big mistakes.

I believe these two reasons are excuses for people who have deemed automation to be evil.

So let’s explore each one.

Reason 1: Loss of jobs to automation

Some times people are afraid of losing their job to automation.

One report last year mentions one in four jobs are at risk of being lost by 2030 due to automation.

One in four jobs in the United States will face a high risk of automation job displacement by 2030.

So I can understand the concern here.

Unfortunately, history has shown us that efficiency will win over time.

And if you aren’t helping drive this efficiency, you may be at higher risk when it arrives.

Reason 2: Automation is prone to mistakes

Another reason I hear of people not automating is due to potential for mistakes. If a human isn’t there to do the task, who will fix it if it goes wrong?

The reality is that if you kind of limp into automating operational tasks, you run the risk of doing it poorly.

That leads to mistakes, which can be very damaging.

But this is not a reason to avoid automating.

Benefit of automation

The truth is that if you automate, you make yourself more valuable.

This is because you can do more valuable tasks that are not as easy to automate.

And being intentional about automating will make those tasks more reliable.

Putting in safeguards and solid testing will reduce the amount of mistakes of automated tasks.

Just look at the flight industry.

Automation in flight did not suddenly mean that pilots were no longer necessary.

But it did make flying safer.

Conclusion

Technology is ever-advancing, and if you want to keep current you will want to spend less time on low-value tasks that are easily automated.

A Data Guardian will be strategic on what they automate.

But automate they will.
